At the end of the day, I returned to my apartment and, in my lounge, set up my tablet for a video call with my twin brother. This was a conversation long overdue.

Lennox answered almost immediately and peered at me, his consternated frown identical to Da’s. “Skye. How are ye?”

I eyed the screen, recognising his location from previous calls. He was in the office at the snowboarding centre, and it was early afternoon in the UK. “Are you sitting down?”

He raised the camera to show that he was. “Did ye want Isobel on the call? She’ll be here soon.”

“I’ll speak to her separately. I need to share something with you.” I paused for dramatic effect. “I’m pregnant.”

A shocked silence held the other end of the call. My brother’s frown deepened, and he drew back a couple of inches.

“Five and a half months,” I added. “Ma and Da already know.”

Lennox palmed his jaw. “How did that happen?”

I burst out in a giggle. “How do you think?”

“Aye, I didnae mean… Ah fuck.” He shifted on his chair. “You’re pregnant? With a bairn?”

“No, with a litter of kittens. Of course a bairn.” Grinning, I reclined on the couch, taking the tablet with me.

Part of my need to get away from my family’s estate was reflected in my relationship with my twin. Lennox and I had never been close. Our personalities were opposites in almost every way, except for the fact we had the same backbone of honesty, hard work, and respect.

Where I was quiet and patient, he was loud and bossy. I went out of my way to do things for others. He barked orders at people and expected them to obey.

All of which you’d expect from a man raised to take over our father’s position.

I loved him dearly, and we were friends, but I wished we’d had that deep connection that twins were supposed to share. Then again, after my day of soul searching, I had begun to wonder if that was my doing.

I’d always known I’d have to leave to find my way in the world. Had I shut myself off from him?

“Sorry.” My brother shook his head, worry in every move. “Can I ask about the father?”

“You can.” Oof. This was the harder part. “You know him, actually. It’s Artair. Your friend.”

Lennox’s jaw dropped, and I hastened on.

“Do you remember my photo shoot in the Inner Hebrides in the summer? We met there and hit it off. He’s aware of the baby and he’s been wonderful.”

“No wonder he won’t answer my calls,” Lennox muttered. “You’re a couple?”

I hesitated, unprepared with an answer. “We spent the last few days together. I’ve been back to Duine as well.” Oh hell. I hadn’t meant to say that. Lennox hadn’t given me any complaint for missing his snowboarding centre’s grand opening, but I knew it hurt him. It must have. “I went to tell him I was pregnant,” I added, quieter now. “Truth is, we aren’t a couple. But if we didn’t live so far apart, that might be different.
